Thermal coal is also sold to the domestic market. Saleable coal production for the combined operation is approximately 14 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources are 877 million tonnes for Blackwater and Blackwater South (2003). Reported workforce for Blackwater and South Blackwater combined in 2003 is 625.

Low ash and low sulphur, high volatile thermal coal is exported to Asia and Europe with small tonnages sold to the domestic market. Saleable coal production is 12 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources are 98 million tonnes (2002). Reported workforce for Blair Athol in 2003 is 190. The nearby Clermont coal deposit is expected to begin production in 2008 and will replace coal from Blair Athol as reserves are depleted. Clermont has measured coal resources of 197 million tonnes (2002).

Low volatile, low ash and sulphur, high energy PCI coal and high energy thermal coal is exported to Asia, Europe and South America. Saleable coal production is 4.2 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources are 227 million tonnes (2002). Reported workforce for Coppabella in 2003 is approximately 300. Civil works are currently in progress to relocate the adjacent Peak Downs Highway and Goonyella-Hay Point railway corridor to access an additional 20 Mt of coal resource.  Macarthur Coal's subsidiary, Queensland Coke & Energy Pty Ltd, together with Stanwell Corporation Limited is investigating the feasibility of establishing a new generation coke making facility at Stanwell in Central Queensland.

Saleable coal production is approximately 6 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources are 88 million tonnes (2003). Reported workforce for Curragh in 2003 is 460 including contractors. Wesfarmers is currently working on the development of Curragh North, which will more than double the recoverable coal reserves currently available, extending the life of mining operations until at least 2025. Production from the Curragh North coal resource is expected to begin around the end of the first quarter of the 2005 calendar year.

Anglo Coal Australia and Mitsui Coal Holdings intend to recapitalise their existing operations at the Moura open cut coal mine and to establish two additional operations on adjacent tenures. The new and expanded operations will be known as the Dawson Complex (North, Central South). The Dawson Complex is held through a joint venture, comprising Anglo Coal Australia (51%) and Mitsui Coal Holdings (49%). Production will increase from 7.0 Mtpa to 12.7 Mtpa of saleable coal. Capital expenditure is estimated in excess of US$ 600 million and will include a new coal preparation plant, additional mining equipment, a coal conveying system for transporting coal, rail load out facilities and administration buildings. The additional coal will be made available for the market in 2007. The Dawson Central mine is located 140 km southwest of Gladstone and is operated by Anglo Coal (Moura) Ltd. Medium volatile coking coal, high volatile semi-soft coking coal and low ash thermal coal is exported to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Reported workforce for Moura in 2003 is 402. Moura was the first operation in Australia to establish a commercial coal seam gas business alongside its coal mining operations.

Reported workforce for Goonyella/Riverside combined in 2003 is 646. BMA have recently announced plans to develop the Broadmeadow underground mine within the Goonyella mine lease. Planned production from Broadmeadow of 3.6 Mtpa of high quality coking coal is anticipated in late 2003.
