Explanatory notes
Gas is an important energy resource for Queensland, which plays an increasingly significant role as a fuel source for electricity generation, industrial processes, business and residential consumers.
The term "gas" usually encompasses:
- Two types of related, naturally occurring gases (natural
gas and coal seam methane), both of which contain mainly methane (CH4
). Both of these gases are found in Queensland in commercial quantities;
- LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is one of the petroleum products produced in the oil refining process. Queensland does not have significant oil reserves. (Queensland Office of Energy)
In the Bowen Basin, natural gas is produced in the North Denison Trough, north of Rolleston. Coal seam gas is produced at Moura and Moranbah, but extensive reserves await development.
