Key Points
- The estimated resident population of the Bowen Basin at 30 June 2001 was
70,442 people, representing a total decrease of 4,310 people or 1.2% per
annum since 1996. In comparison, Queensland's average annual growth rate
in the 1996 to 2001 period was 1.7%.
- At 30 June 2001, 25.2% of the Bowen Basin population were aged under 15
years, and 7.3% were aged 65 and over. This compares with 21.3% and 11.6%
respectively for Queensland.
- In the Bowen Basin, 84.9% of the population was born in Australia. This
figure compares with 77.7% for Queensland.
- In the Bowen Basin, there were more than 4,990 unoccupied dwellings on
Census night 2001, 16.0% of all dwelling stock. This compares with the Queensland
average of 8.6%.
- In 2001, dwellings being rented in the Bowen Basin had a median weekly
rent of between $50 and $100. This compares with Queensland's median rent
of between $150 and $200 a week in 2001.
- Between 1996 and 2001, the labour force in the Bowen Basin decreased by
1,316 people, with the rate of unemployment decreasing from 6.0% in 1996
to 4.8% in 2001. This compares with Queensland's unemployment rate of 8.2%
in 2001.
- Of the 35,212 employed persons (excluding overseas visitors) who were
in the Bowen Basin on Census night 2001, 19.1% were intermediate production
and transport workers and 15.1% were tradespersons and related workers.
This compares with 8.5% and 12.8% respectively for Queensland.
- Of the 35,220 employed persons (excluding overseas visitors) who were
in the Bowen Basin on Census night 2001, 18.9% worked in agriculture, forestry
and fishing and 18.7% worked in mining. This compares with 4.9% and 1.2%
respectively for Queensland.
- In the Bowen Shire there were 750 caravans, cabins or houseboats (12.1%
of the dwelling stock), and Emerald Shire also had a large number of caravans,
cabins or houseboats (722 or 12.2% of the dwelling stock).
- In the Bowen Basin, 16.3% of the occupied private dwellings were being
purchased which was substantially lower than the Queensland average of 25.8%.
- Low rents of less than $100 a week applied to more than half (53.4%) of
rental dwellings in the Bowen Basin (4,951 dwellings).
- Production industries employed 17,530 people of the people in the Bowen
Basin in 2001 while service industries employed 16,872 people.
- There were 9,951 high-income earners ($1,000 or more a week) or 17.7%
of the Bowen Basin.s population aged 15 years and over. This compares with
an average of 8.8% for Queensland.

to be usual residents of an area. Census count is adjusted to exclude people
not usually resident in the area and include people usually resident who were
elsewhere on Census night. Further adjustments take into account Census under-enumeration
and persons who usually reside in the area but were temporarily overseas on
Census night.

Population Change
- The estimated resident population of the Bowen Basin at 30 June 2001 was
70,442 people, representing a total decrease of 4,310 people or 1.2% per
annum since 1996.
- On Census night (7 August 2001), 74,205 people were counted in the Bowen
Basin, representing a total decrease of 2,837 people or 0.7% per annum since
the 1996 Census.
- Duaringa Shire had the most rapidly declining population of any Local
Government Area (LGA) in the Bowen Basin between 1996 and 2001 (6.5% a year).
- The population of both Banana Shire and Emerald Shire grew by 0.8% a year
between 1996 and 2001.
- Between 1991 and 1996, Emerald Shire was the only LGA in the region to
experience population growth (5.0% a year).


2001 Population
- With an estimated resident population of 14,448 people at 30 June 2001,
Banana Shire was the largest LGA in the Bowen Basin with 20.5% of the region.s
population.
- Nebo Shire had the smallest population of the LGAs in the Bowen Basin,
with an estimated resident population of 2,094 people.
- On Census night 2001, 64,368 people (86.7% of the population) in the Bowen
Basin were counted at home. A further 6,383 people (8.6%) were visitors
from Queensland, 2,796 people (3.8%) were interstate visitors, and 658 people
(0.9%) were visitors from overseas.
- The highest proportion of visitors from Queensland was in Nebo Shire (21.6%);
the highest proportion of interstate visitors was in Bowen Shire (7.3%);
and Bowen Shire (1.9%) also had the highest proportion of overseas visitors.
- Emerald Shire had the highest number of visitors from Queensland on Census
night in 2001 (1,466 people) and Bowen Shire had the highest number of interstate
visitors (1,006 people) and overseas visitors (262 people).


Age profile
- At 30 June 2001 there were 17,997 young people (0-14 years) in the Bowen
Basin, comprising 25.2% of the region.s population. Duaringa Shire had the
highest proportion of young people (30.2%) and Bowen Shire had the lowest
proportion (21.4%).
- There were 5,191 older people (65 years and over) in the Bowen Basin at
30 June 2001, comprising 7.3% of the population. In Bowen Shire, 1,710 people
or 13.8% of the population were older people. In Duaringa Shire, only 2.9%
of the population were aged 65 years and over.
- The number of 'working age' people (15-64 years) in the Bowen Basin totaled
48,786 people at 30 June 2001, or 68.5%. Broadsound Shire (72.0%) had the
highest proportion of 'working age' people and Duaringa Shire (67.0%) had
the lowest proportion.


Changing age structure


Language spoken at home
- In the Bowen Basin, 92.0% of the population (67,716 people) reported they
spoke English at home and 2.4% of the population (1,782 people) reported
they spoke another language at home.
- The top five languages spoken at home in Bowen Basin were Italian (9.1%
of all people speaking another language), Tagalog/Filipino (9.0%), German
(7.4%), Vietnamese (5.8%), and Turkish (5.5%).
- The proportions of people speaking a language other than English at home
ranged from a high of 5.0% in Bowen Shire to a low of 1.0% in Peak Downs
Shire.

Birthplace
- At the 2001 Census there were 6,306 people in the Bowen basin who stated
they were born overseas. This was 8.6% of the population.
- The highest-ranking birthplace countries of people who were born overseas
were the United Kingdom (birthplace of 1,901 people), New Zealand (birthplace
of 1,739 people), Philippines (birthplace of 296 people), Germany (birthplace
of 242 people), and Netherlands (birthplace of 225 people).
- Of the LGAs in the Bowen Basin, Bowen Shire and Emerald Shire each had
the highest percentages of New Zealand born people (3.0%); Bowen Shire had
the highest percentages of people born in the UK and Ireland (3.7%), other
parts of Europe (2.3%) and Asia (1.9%).
- In contrast, Bauhinia Shire had the lowest percentage of people born in
New Zealand (1.4%), Duaringa Shire had the lowest percentage of people born
in UK and Ireland (1.9%), Peak Downs Shire had the lowest percentage of
people born in other parts of Europe (0.5%) and Duaringa Shire and Peak
Downs Shire had the lowest percentage of people born in Asia (0.4% each).



Population composition
- In the Bowen Basin, 84.2% of the population (62,422 people) stated they
had been born in Australia, including 3,232 Indigenous Australians (4.4%
of the Bowen Basin population).
- Duaringa Shire was the LGA with the largest number of Indigenous people
with a total of 1,254 people.
- Bauhinia Shire (87.3%) had the highest proportion of Australian born people
(excluding Indigenous Australians) and Duaringa Shire (71.4%) had the lowest
proportion.
- The proportion of people born overseas ranged from a high of 12.3% in
Bowen Shire to a low of 5.7% in Duaringa Shire and Bauhinia Shire.
- Bowen Shire had the highest number of overseas visitors (262 people) whilst
Nebo Shire (4 people) recorded the lowest number of overseas visitors on
30 June 2001.


Education
- In the Bowen Basin, 15,864 people (21.4% of the population) were attending
an educational institution in 2001. There were 1,168 children in pre-school
(7.4% of all student), 8,027 students in infants/primary schools (50.6%),
4,013 students in secondary schools (25.3%), and 2,322 students in technical
or tertiary education (14.6%).
- Nebo Shire (11.6%) was the LGA with the highest proportion of students
in pre-school. The LGA with the highest proportion of students in government
infants/primary schools was Duaringa Shire (52.9%). Bowen Shire had the
lowest proportion of students in pre-school (6.0%) and Emerald Shire had
the lowest proportion of students in government infants/primary schools
(34.5%).
- The percentage of children in non-government infants/primary schools (8.0%
of all those attending an educational institution in the Bowen Basin) was
highest in Emerald Shire (14.1%); the lowest proportion was in Duaringa
Shire with 0.7%.
- Bowen Shire had the highest proportion of students in government secondary
schools (27.7%) and Emerald Shire had the lowest proportion (13.0%).
- Almost one fifth of all students in Emerald Shire (18.2%) were attending
a technical or tertiary institution in 2001 compared to a low of 12.8% in
Broadsound Shire and Peak Downs Shire.
- Emerald Shire (9.5%) had the highest proportion of students in non-government
secondary schools.

Religion
- At the 2001 Census, almost three-quarters of the 73,548 people in the
Bowen Basin reported that they were Christians. There were 18,004 Catholics,
17,960 Anglicans, and 8,016 Uniting Church members.
- In the Bowen Basin, there were a relatively low proportion of people who
stated that they had no religion (13.0% or 9,540 people). Proportions ranged
from 15.1% in Broadsound Shire to 9.4% in Bauhinia Shire.
- A further 12.1% of the population in the Bowen Basin (8,922 people) did
not state their religious affiliation.



Marital Status
- At the 2001 Census, more than half the population of the Bowen Basin aged
15 years and over (57.2% or 32,460 people) reported that they were married.
Bauhinia and Peak Downs were the LGAs with the highest proportion of married
people (61.9% each) and Duaringa Shire had the lowest proportion (53.0%).
- There were 1,842 people who were separated (3.2% of the population of
the Bowen Basin). Nebo (3.9%) was the LGA with the highest proportion and
Bauhinia Shire (2.6%) had the lowest proportion.
- A further 6.4% of the population (3,636 people) was divorced. In Bowen
Shire, 8.0% of people aged 15 years and over were divorced. Peak Downs Shire
(4.9%) was the LGA that had the lowest proportion of divorced people.
- In addition there were 2,324 widows/widowers (4.1% of the population).
Bowen Shire had the highest proportion of widows/widowers (7.1%) and Broadsound
Shire (2.0%) had the lowest proportion.
- Less than one-third of the population (29.1%) of the Bowen Basin had never
married. This compares with a high of 36.4% in Duaringa Shire and a low
of 25.7% in Bauhinia Shire.

Family type
- Of the 17,491 families in occupied private dwellings in the Bowen Basin
in 2001, couple families with children comprised 52.3% (9,155 families).
The highest proportion of couple families with children was 62.4% in Peak
Downs Shire and the lowest proportion was 43.1% in Bowen Shire.
- Couple families without children comprised 36.4% of all families in the
Bowen Basin (6,368 families). In Bowen Shire, 42.3% of all families were
couples without children compared to 30.6% in Duaringa Shire.
- The 1,783 one-parent families accounted for 10.2% of all families in the
Bowen Basin in 2001. Bowen Shire (13.3%) was the LGA with the highest proportion
of one-parent families, while Nebo Shire had only 5.5% in this category.

Relationships
- Of the 61,034 people in occupied private dwellings in the Bowen Basin
in 2001, husbands and wives accounted for 49.3%, a total of 30,106 people.
Husbands and wives accounted for 53.1% of the population in Broadsound Shire,
while Duaringa Shire had the lowest proportion (46.1%).
- There were 1,778 lone parents (2.9% of the population) in the Bowen Basin.
Bowen Shire had the highest proportion of lone parents (3.9%) and Nebo Shire
had the lowest proportion (1.4%).
- A further 5,113 people (8.4% of the population) in the Bowen Basin lived
alone. In Bowen Shire (11.1%) of the population lived alone but in Peak
Downs Shire only 6.1% were lone persons.
- More than one-quarter of the people in the Bowen Basin (27.1%) were children
aged less than 15 years, totaling 16,533 people. Proportions in the region
ranged from 31.4% in Duaringa Shire to 22.7% in Bowen Shire.



People per dwelling
- The average number of people per dwelling in the Bowen Basin in 2001 was
2.6.
- On average in the Bowen Basin, 2.8 people lived in each separate house,
1.8 people lived in each townhouse, 1.7 people lived in each unit, and 1.7
people lived in each caravan, cabin or houseboat.
- Occupancy rates for separate houses in the Bowen Basin ranged from a high
of 3.1 people per dwelling in Peak Downs Shire to a low of 2.6 people per
dwelling in Bowen Shire.
- Townhouse occupancy rates in the Bowen Basin ranged from 2.7 in Broadsound
Shire to 1.3 in Bauhinia Shire, Belyando Shire and Peak Downs Shire.
- Unit occupancy rates in the Bowen Basin ranged from 1.9 in Duaringa Shire
to 1.4 in Broadsound Shire and Peak Downs Shire.


Dwelling stock
- At the 2001 Census there were 31,300 private dwellings counted in the
Bowen Basin, including 4,999 unoccupied dwellings (16.0% of the stock).
Unoccupied dwellings made up nearly one-quarter of all dwelling stock in
Broadsound Shire and Nebo Shire but only 12.9% in Bowen Shire.
- More than two-thirds of the dwellings in the Bowen Basin were separate
houses, a total of 21,277 dwellings. Banana Shire had the highest proportion
of separate houses in its stock (76.0%) and Emerald Shire had the lowest
proportion (60.9%).
- Townhouses (1.7% of all private dwellings), units (4.6%), and caravans,
cabins or houseboats (7.8%) comprised smaller proportions of the dwelling
stock in the Bowen Basin.
- In the Bowen Shire there were 750 caravans, cabins or houseboats (12.1%
of the dwelling stock), and Emerald Shire also had a large number of caravans,
cabins or houseboats (722 or 12.2% of the dwelling stock). In Bauhinia Shire,
the 146 caravans, cabins or houseboats made up 12.4% of its dwelling stock,
the highest proportion in the region.
- Almost all the units in the Bowen Basin were in Emerald Shire (475 dwellings)
and Bowen Shire (458 dwellings).


Tenure
- In the Bowen Basin in 2001, there were 26,293 occupied private dwellings
and 35.8% of them (9,419 dwellings) were fully owned. Bauhinia Shire had
the highest proportion of fully owned dwellings (48.9%) and Nebo Shire had
the lowest proportion (20.9%).
- The proportion of occupied private dwellings being purchased in the Bowen
Basin was 16.3% (4,283 dwellings). Emerald Shire (22.4%) had the highest
proportion of dwellings being purchased and Nebo Shire (6.5%) had the lowest
proportion.
- In the Bowen Basin, 35.2% of occupied private dwellings were being rented,
including 847 dwellings (3.2%) being rented from Housing Authorities. Banana
Shire had the highest proportion (5.1%) and the highest number (249 dwellings)
of Housing Authority dwellings, while Nebo Shire had the lowest proportion.

Non-private dwellings
- In 2001, there were 3,226 usual residents in non-private dwellings in
the Bowen Basin. Of these, 33.8% were in nurse/staff quarters, 25.7% were
in hotels or motels, and 6.6% were in hospitals.
- In the Bowen Basin, the largest numbers of usual residents in non-private
dwellings were found in Banana Shire (663 people including 220 usual residents
in hotels or motels), Belyando Shire (523 people including 116 usual residents
in nurse/staff quarters) and Broadsound Shire (454 people including 314
in nurse/staff quarters).
- In Peak Downs Shire, 85.7% of usual residents in non-private dwellings
were in nurse/staff quarters. In Emerald Shire, 38.9% of usual residents
in non-private dwellings were in hotels or motels, while in Bowen Shire,
18.5% of usual residents in non-private dwellings were in accommodation
for the retired or aged.


Income
- In the Bowen Basin, 10,643 people or 18.9% of the population aged 15 years
and over recorded a low income of between $1 and $199 a week at the 2001
Census. Bowen Shire had the highest proportion (22.5%) in this range and
Nebo Shire had the lowest proportion (11.2%). There were also 3,723 people
(6.6%) with negative or nil income.
- There were 10,471 people in the Bowen Basin with an income between $200
and $399 a week, or 18.6% of the population aged 15 years and over. Bowen
Shire (28.2%) had the largest proportion of people in the $200-$399 income
bracket.
- Duaringa Shire and Peak Downs Shire (8.8%) each had the largest proportions
of people with negative or nil income.
- There were 9,951 high-income earners ($1,000 or more a week) or 17.7%
of the Bowen Basin.s population aged 15 years and over. Proportions ranged
from 33.5% in Nebo Shire to 6.4% in Bowen Shire. This compares with an average
of 8.8% for Queensland.

Mortgage
- Of the 4,295 occupied private dwellings being purchased in the Bowen Basin
in 2001, 36.0% had repayments of between $400 and $799 a month. Bauhinia
Shire (47.4%) had the highest proportion of repayments in this range. Belyando
Shire (24.1%) was the LGA with the lowest proportion of repayments in this
range.
- Low repayments of less than $400 a month applied to 20.4% of dwellings
being purchased in the Bowen Basin. In Belyando Shire more than half the
dwellings being purchased (52.8%) had repayments in this range, while Emerald
Shire (4.6%) had the lowest proportion.
- High repayments of $2,000 a month or more applied to 3.0% of dwellings
being purchased in the Bowen Basin. Peak Downs Shire had the highest proportion
with 7.4%.



Rent
- In the Bowen Basin, there were 9,265 occupied private dwellings being
rented in 2001.
- Low rents of less than $100 a week applied to more than half (53.4%) of
rental dwellings in the Bowen Basin (4,951 dwellings). Peak Downs Shire
had the largest proportion of low rents (80.2%) while Emerald Shire had
the smallest proportion (30.5%). This compares with 18.8% for Queensland.
- High rents of $400 a week or more applied to 1.2% of all rental dwellings
in the Bowen Basin (108 dwellings). Bauhinia Shire was the LGA with the
largest proportion of high rents (4.2%).


Usual residence
- Of the 69,005 residents in the Bowen Basin in 2001, 29,245 or 42.4% lived
at the same address as in 1996. A slightly higher number, 29,429 residents
(42.6%), lived elsewhere in Australia in 1996, and 944 residents (1.4%)
were living overseas in 1996.
- The proportions of people living at the same address in both 1996 and
2001 ranged from a high of 50.5% in Bauhinia Shire to a low of 29.3% in
Nebo Shire.
- The proportions of people living elsewhere in Australia in 1996 varied
from a high of 53.4% in Emerald Shire to a low of 37.9% in Bowen Shire.
- In Emerald Shire, 2.1 % of residents had been living overseas in 1996
compared to 0.3% in Bauhinia Shire.


Different address by age group
- In 2001 in the Bowen Basin, almost one-quarter of residents (24.4% or
7,406 people) who had lived at a different address in 1996 were aged 25-34
years. The next largest group of residents who had moved were aged 5-14
years (20.3% or 6,151 people) followed by the 35-44 year-old (18.3% or 5,563
residents).
- Nebo Shire (28.1%) had the largest proportion of people who had moved
in the 25-34 year age group. Peak Downs Shire (23.6%) had the largest proportion
of people who had moved in the 5-14 year age group. Nebo Shire (20.9%) had
the largest proportion of people who had moved in the 35-44 year age group.
- Bowen Shire had the largest proportion of people who were aged 75 years
and over (3.6%) and had moved.

Labour force status
- At the 2001 Census, more than six out of every ten people aged 15 years
and over in the Bowen Basin were in the labour force, a total of 36,992
people. At that time the unemployment rate in the region was 4.8%.
- Bowen Shire was the LGA with the highest unemployment rate (7.3%) while
Bauhinia Shire had the lowest (1.8%).
- Nebo Shire (72.5%) had the highest labour force participation rate in
the Bowen Basin while Bowen Shire (55.3%) had the lowest rate.
- The highest proportion of people aged 15 years and over employed full-time
was in Nebo Shire (56.7%). Banana Shire had the highest proportion of part-time
employees (17.3%).

Occupation
- In the Bowen Basin, 6,739 people (19.1% of people) were employed as intermediate
production and transport workers, and a further 6,374 people (18.1%) were
professionals or associate professionals. The proportion of people employed
in trades and related occupations was 15.1% (5,300 people) and the proportion
employed as labourers and related occupations was 14.5% (5,120 people).
- Nebo Shire was the LGA with the highest proportion of people employed
as intermediate production and transport workers (32.1%) while Emerald Shire
(23.0%) had the highest proportion of people employed as professionals or
associate professionals.
- In Broadsound Shire (19.4%) of employed people worked in trades and related
occupations and, in Bowen Shire, 26.2% of employed people worked in labouring
and related occupations.
- One third of employed people in Bauhinia Shire were managers or administrators.


Industry
- Service industries employed 16,872 of the people in the Bowen Basin in
2001 while production industries employed 17,530 people. More than half
of all employed people in Bauhinia Shire, Belyando Shire, Broadsound Shire,
Duaringa Shire, Nebo shire and Peak Downs Shire were employed in production
industries compared to the Queensland average of 24.7%.
- There were 3,657 people (10.4%) in the Bowen Basin who were employed in
retail trade. Emerald Shire was the LGA with the highest proportion (15.0%)
and Nebo Shire had the lowest proportion (3.6%).
- There were 2,223 people (6.3%) in the Bowen Basin who were employed in
the construction industry. Broadsound Shire (7.9%) had the highest proportion
in this industry and Bowen Shire (4.8%) was the LGA with the lowest proportion.
- The 2,131 people employed in the education industry comprised 6.1% of
employed people in the Bowen Basin. Emerald Shire (7.4%) had the highest
proportion of employed people in this industry and Nebo Shire (3.4%) had
the lowest proportion.


Qualifications
- Of the 56,191 people aged 15 years and over in the Bowen Basin, 3,009
people (5.4%) had obtained a bachelor degree since leaving school and 10,115
people (18.0%) had a trade certificate. A further 297 people (0.5%) had
a postgraduate degree.
- In the Bowen Basin, the proportions of people aged 15 years and over with
a bachelor degree varied from 6.5% in Emerald Shire to 3.7% in Bowen Shire.
- The proportions of people with a trade certificate ranged from a high
of 21.9% in Nebo Shire to a low of 14.8% in Bauhinia Shire.



Field of study
- In the Bowen Basin, 12.2% of people aged 15 years and over (6,831 people)
had a qualification in the field of engineering (and related fields). An
additional 1,805 people (3.2%) had a qualification in the field of education,
and 1,429 people (2.5%) had a qualification in the field of health.
- Nebo Shire (18.1%) was the LGA with the highest proportion of people aged
15 years and over with a qualification in the field of engineering.
- In both Bauhinia Shire and Emerald Shire, 4.3% of the population had a
qualification in the field of education and in Bauhinia Shire 3.5% had a
qualification in the field of health, the highest proportions in the region.



Travel to work
- On Census day 2001, 21,796 people or 61.9% of employed people in the Bowen
Basin traveled to work by car. Bus only was used by 744 people (2.1%) as
a mode of transport to travel to work, while 2,703 people (7.7%) walked
to work. In addition, 3,372 people (9.6% of employed people) worked at home.
- In the Bowen Basin, the proportions of people traveling to work by car
ranged from 66.0% in Emerald Shire to 37.3% in Bauhinia Shire.
- Nebo Shire was the LGA with the highest proportion (8.9%) of bus patronage,
while 15.1% of employed persons in Bauhinia Shire walked to work.
- The proportions of people cycling to work ranged from 2.1% in Emerald
Shire to 0.6% in Bauhinia Shire.
- The proportion of people working at home ranged from 25.1% in Bauhinia
Shire to 6.5% in Emerald Shire.



Motor vehicles
- In the Bowen Basin, there were 10,224 occupied private dwellings (38.9%)
with one vehicle parked on Census night 2001 while 8,707 dwellings (33.1%)
had two vehicles parked. A further 1,720 dwellings (6.5%) were without vehicles
and 3,957 dwellings (15.0%) had three or more vehicles parked.
- In Peak Downs Shire 40.7% of occupied private dwellings had two vehicles
parked and, in Bauhinia Shire, 24.6% of dwellings had three or more vehicles
parked on Census night.
- Bowen Shire was the LGA with the highest percentage of dwellings without
a vehicle (10.2%) while Nebo Shire had the lowest percentage (2.2%).
- The proportion of dwellings with one vehicle parked ranged from 45.0%
in Bowen Shire to 30.3% in Peak Downs Shire.


Households
- Nearly three-quarters of private dwellings in the Bowen Basin (17,349
dwellings) were occupied by family households on Census night 2001 and less
than one-quarter (5,109 dwellings) were lone person households.
- Peak Downs Shire was the LGA in the Bowen Basin with the highest proportion
of family households (80.7%) while Bowen Shire (69.8%) had the lowest proportion.
- Bowen Shire had the highest proportion of lone person households (26.9%)
while Peak Downs Shire (17.6%) had the lowest proportion.
- The proportion of group households was relatively low in the Bowen Basin,
ranging from 4.6% in Emerald Shire to 1.6% in both Broadsound Shire and
Peak Downs Shire.

Household income
- In the Bowen Basin, 5,617 households (24.3% of all households in the region)
recorded a household income of $1,500 a week or more at the 2001 Census.
A further 3,835 households (16.6%) had an income of between $1,000 and $1,499
a week. At the other end of the scale, there were 217 households (0.9%)
with a negative or nil income and 2,159 households (9.3%) with less than
$300 a week.
- More than one-third of households in Belyando Shire, Broadsound Shire
and Peak Downs Shire had high incomes of $1,500 a week or more compared
to the Queensland average of 14.8%. All LGAs in the Bowen Basin, except
Bowen Shire, had proportions of high-income households above the Queensland
average.
- The proportions of households with incomes of between $1 and $299 a week
varied from a high of 15.6% in Bowen Shire to a low of 3.4% in Broadsound
Shire.


Computer and internet use
- Questions on computer and internet use were asked for the first time at
the 2001 Census. The question on computer use allowed for either a yes or
no response, whereas the question on internet use allowed for multiple responses.
- The answers revealed that 36.4% of the population (a total of 26,733 people)
in the Bowen Basin used a computer at home with 15.4% (11,303 people) also
using the internet at home. A further 2,703 people (3.7%) used the internet
at work.
- Computer usage at home ranged from a high of 43.5% of people in Belyando
Shire to a low of 25.3% in Bowen Shire.
- Internet use at home ranged from a high of 20.0% in Belyando Shire to
a low of 9.8% in Bowen Shire.
- Internet use at work ranged from a high of 5.2% in Emerald Shire to a
low of 2.7% in Broadsound Shire.
