- The estimated resident population of the Bowen Basin Localities at 30
June 2001 was 42,059
people, representing a total decrease of 1,483 people or 0.7% per annum since 1996. - The number of young people (0-14 years) decreased by 12.5% from 12,863 people at the 30th June 1996 to 11,253 people at the 30th June 2001.

It also includes additional unpublished census data; the latest estimated resident population, and building approval figures. DEMOGRAPHIC profiles are available for areas throughout Queensland, including Local Government Areas, Statistical Local Areas (suburbs), urban centres, towns and postcodes.
Also available from the Planning Information and Forecasting Unit (QDLGP) are COMPARATIVE profiles. These have been designed to provide comparisons between an area such as a Local Government Area and its respective region (a Statistical Division) or between a number of selected areas (e.g. regional cities and Brisbane City).
Population change

- On Census night (7 August 2001), 41,847 people were counted in the Bowen Basin Localities, representing a total decrease of 2,684 people or 1.2% per annum since the 1996 Census.
- The estimated resident population of the Bowen Basin Localities at 30 June 2001 was 42,059 people, representing a total decrease of 1,483 people or 0.7% per annum since 1996.
- In comparison, Queensland's average annual growth rate in the 1996 to 2001 period was 1.7%.

Census counts: Number of people counted in an area on Census night. Census counts include usual residents who were at home, as well as visitors from elsewhere in Australia or from overseas. Australian residents elsewhere in Australia or temporarily overseas at the time of the Census are excluded from the area.
Estimated resident population: Number of people estimated to be usual residents of an area. Census count is adjusted to exclude people not usually resident in the area and include people usually resident who were elsewhere on Census night. Further adjustments take into account Census under-enumeration and persons who usually reside in the area but were temporarily overseas on Census night.
Age profile
- The number of young people (0-14 years) decreased by 12.5% from 12,863 people at the 30th June 1996 to 11,253 people at the 30th June 2001.
- The number of older people (65 years and over) increased by 48.7% from 1,346 people at the 30th June 1996 to 2,001 people at the 30th June 2001.
- The number of working age people (15-64 years) decreased by 1.8% from 29,333 people at the 30th June 1996 to 28,805 people at the 30th June 2001.


- At the 30th June 2001, 26.8% of the Bowen Basin Localities' population were aged under 15 years, and 4.8% were aged 65 and over. This compares with 21.3% and 11.6% respectively for Queensland.

Usual residents
- In the Bowen Basin Localities on Census night 2001, there were 165 overseas visitors (0.4% of the region's census count) and 3,897 domestic visitors (9.3% of the region's census count). This compares with 1.9% and 6.2% respectively for Queensland.
Year of arrival
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, of the 3,419 people who were born overseas, 70.5% arrived in Australia before 1991, and 16.0% arrived from 1996 onwards. This compares with 68.3% and 17.5% respectively for Queensland.

Language spoken at home
- 92.3% of the population of the Bowen Basin Localities reported they spoke only English at home.
- However, 830 people (2.0% of the population) reported they spoke another language at home. This compares with 7.1% for Queensland.
- The top five languages spoken at home in the Bowen Basin Localities were Tagalog/Filipino (11.0% of all people speaking another language), Italian (8.6%), Chinese (7.8%), Greek (7.4%), and Hindi (3.9%).
Birthplace
- The number of people in the Bowen Basin Localities who were born overseas decreased from 3,692 people in 1996 to 3,435 people in 2001. The percentage of the population born overseas decreased from 8.3% in 1996 to 8.2% in 2001.
- The highest ranking birthplace countries of people who were born overseas were New Zealand (birthplace of 1,049 people), the United Kingdom (birthplace of 1,002 people), Philippines (birthplace of 202 people), South Africa (birthplace of 116 people), and Netherlands (birthplace of 111 people).
- More than 2,810 people failed to answer the Census question.
Population composition
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, 85.0% of the population was born in Australia. This figure compares with 77.7% for Queensland.
- Indigenous Australians accounted for 3.0% of the Bowen Basin Localities' population in 2001, compared with 3.1% for Queensland.
Education
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, more than 9,940 people (or 23.8% of the population) were attending an educational institution in 2001.
- The number of people undertaking University or other Tertiary studies decreased from 726 people in 1996 to 712 people in 2001.
- The number of people undertaking Technical or Further Education increased from about 760 people in 1996 to nearly 820 people in 2001.
Religion
- More than 70.0% of people in the Bowen Basin Localities reported that they were Christians in 2001. Catholics represented 10,953 people and Anglicans represented 9,526 people in the Bowen Basin Localities.
- Of non-Christian religions, Buddhism had the largest percentage of followers, with 141 people.

Marital status
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, about three fifths of the population aged 15 years and over (56.4% or 17,683 people), reported that they were married, compared with 51.1% for Queensland.
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, there were 3,006 people who were separated or divorced and 1,129 widows/widowers.
- About one third of the population had never married.

Family type
- Couple families with children decreased from 60.9% of all families in 1996 to 55.6% in 2001.
- Couple families without children increased from 30.0% of all families in 1996 to 33.1% in 2001.
- One parent families increased from 8.3% of all families in 1996 to 10.3% in 2001.


Relationships
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, there were 2,899 people living alone in 2001, representing 8.1% of the population.
- In addition, there were 1,048 lone parents in the Bowen Basin Localities, representing 2.9% of the population. This compares with 4.6% for Queensland.
- Husbands and wives accounted for 48.6% of the Bowen Basin Localities' population in 2001, a decrease of 1.3 percentage points since 1996.


Dwelling type by age of residents
- In 2001, there were 2,192 people in the Bowen Basin Localities living in attached dwellings such as townhouses, units and flats.
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, there were about 1,450 people living in other(a) dwellings in 2001, and of these people, 14.0% were aged 65 years and over.
People per dwelling
- In the Bowen Basin Localities in 2001, the average number of people per dwelling was lower at 2.7 people, compared with 1996 figures. This compares with a Queensland average of 2.6 people per dwelling in 2001.
- In 2001, an average of 1.7 people lived in each townhouse, 1.6 people lived in each unit, and 1.6 people lived in each caravan.

Dwelling approvals
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, dwelling approvals averaged 125 a year over the past five years. Dwellings other than separate houses represented almost one fifth of these approvals. On average, approvals were given for 19 townhouses and 5 units per annum.
Dwelling Stock
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, there were 17,381 private dwellings in 2001, representing an increase in dwelling stock of 2.6% since the 1996 Census. This figure compares with a population decrease of 3.4%.
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, the number of occupied Townhouses decreased from 406 in 1996 to 340 in 2001, representing 2.0% of all dwelling stock; the number of occupied Units increased from 849 in 1996 to 991 in 2001, representing 5.7% of all dwelling stock.
- Between 1996 and 2001, there was a decrease of 216 houses and the number of caravans increased to 768.

Unoccupied dwellings
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, there were more than 2,770 unoccupied dwellings on Census night 2001, 15.9% of all dwelling stock. This compares with the Queensland average of 8.6%.

Tenure
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, the proportion of occupied private dwellings owned or being purchased increased from 37.5% in 1996 to 45.7% in 2001. This compares with 62.4% for Queensland.
- The proportion of occupied private dwellings being rented decreased from 58.2% in 1996 to 46.1% in 2001.

Non-private dwellings
- In 2001, 309 of the 976 usual residents in non-private dwellings (31.7%) were in Nurse/staff quarters. Approximately 27.3% of people were living in hotels and motels, 15.6% of people were in "other" non private dwellings, and 12.8% of people were living in accommodation for the retired or aged. A further 6.7% of people lived in hospitals.

Income
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, low income earners (earning less than $200 a week), accounted for 24.2% of all people aged 15 years and over in 2001.
- High income earners (earning more than $1,500 a week), accounted for 13.2% of all people aged 15 years and over in 2001.
- The Bowen Basin Localities had a higher proportion of people earning incomes of $500 a week or more, and a smaller proportion of people earning less than $500 a week, when compared to Queensland figures.

Mortgage
- In 2001, more than half of the housing mortgages in the Bowen Basin Localities had repayments exceeding $600 a month, while more than a quarter of the mortgages had monthly repayments of over $800. This compares with Queensland where more than half had monthly repayments of over $800, and over a quarter had repayments that exceeded $1000 a month.
Rent
- In 2001, dwellings being rented in the Bowen Basin Localities had a median weekly rent of between $50 and $100. This compares with Queensland's median rent of between $150 and $200 a week in 2001.
Migration
- On census night 2001, there were 3,521,990 residents in Queensland, 43.6% of them living in the same addess as in 1996. A further 41.4% of residents in Queensland lived at a different address in Australia in 1996 and 3.5% lived overseas.

- The age profile of people who moved between 1996 and 2001 differs from that of people who did not move.

Labour force
- Between 1996 and 2001, the labour force in the Bowen Basin Localities decreased by 862 people, with the rate of unemployment decreasing from 5.1% in 1996 to 4.5% in 2001. This compares with Queensland's unemployment rate of 8.2% in 2001.
- The percentage of people employed full-time decreased from 73.6% of all employed persons in 1996 to 72.2% of all employed persons in 2001.
- In the Bowen Basin Localities, 24.8% of all persons aged 15 years and over were not in the labour force. This compares with 35.4% for Queensland.


Occupation
- Of the 20,603 employed persons (excluding overseas visitors) who were in the Bowen Basin Localities on Census night 2001, 23.3% were intermediate production and transport workers and 18.7% were tradespersons and related workers. This compares with 8.5% and 12.8% respectively for Queensland.
- Between 1996 and 2001 the occupation with the largest absolute change was tradespersons and related workers with a decrease of 413 people or 9.7%. The occupation with the largest percentage change was advanced clerical and service workers with a decrease of 28.2% or 138 people.

Industry
- Of the 20,638 employed persons (excluding overseas visitors) who were in the Bowen Basin Localities on Census night 2001, 27.6% worked in mining and 12.0% worked in retail trade. This compares with 1.2% and 15.3% respectively for Queensland.
- Between 1996 and 2001 the largest absolute change was in the mining industry with a decrease of 2,142 people or 27.3%. The largest percentage change was in the wholesale trade industry with an increase of 54.6% or 408 people.


Qualifications
- Of the 31,064 people aged 15 years and over in the Bowen Basin Localities in 2001, 32.1% stated that they had a non-school qualification. This compares with 32.3% for Queensland.
- There were 217 people with Postgraduate Degrees (0.7% of the population aged 15 years and over) and 2,016 people with Bachelor Degrees (6.5%).
Field of study
- Of the 31,097 people in the Bowen Basin Localities aged 15 years and over, 15.4% had a qualification in engineering and related technologies. This compares with 8.6% for Queensland.
- A further 3.6% had a qualification in education while 3.2% had a qualification in management and commerce. This compares with 3.4% and 5.8% respectively for Queensland.
Travel to work
- In 2001, more than 14,800 people (71.8% of employed persons) in the Bowen Basin Localities travelled to work using a private vehicle while 490 people (2.4%) travelled by bus or train only. This compares with 65.9% and 4.2% respectively for Queensland.
- A further 1,604 people (7.7% of employed persons) walked or rode a bicycle to work, while 456 people (2.2%) worked from home.
Motor vehicles
- Between 1996 and 2001 the number of occupied private dwellings with one or more cars decreased by -3.0% from 13,239 to 12,840.
- 6.0% of dwellings in the Bowen Basin Localities did not have a car in 1996, declining to 5.7% in 2001.
Households
- There were 13,442 households in the Bowen Basin Localities in 2001, a decrease of 646 or -4.6% since 1996.
- Family households accounted for 75.3% of all households in 2001, down 4.1 percentage points since 1996.
- Lone person households accounted for 21.5% of all households in 2001, up 3.9 percentage points since 1996.
Household income
- The weekly median household income in the Bowen Basin Localities in 2001 was $1,210 up 10.0% since 1996.
- High income households with more than $2,000 a week accounted for 13.3% of all households in the Bowen Basin Localities in 2001.
- Low income households with less than $300 a week accounted for 7.5% of
all households.
